Eric Bana Says He Wasn't Trying to Be Creepy in Dirty John

Bana told Jimmy Fallon his role as John Meehan gives him the opportunity to play an "amazing character."

Episode one of Dirty John is now available on YouTube, BravoTV.com (check out the premiere episode here), VOD, and the Bravo App ahead of its November 25 premiere, and fans of the show are already weighing in — including celebrity fans. When Eric Bana, who plays titular character John Meehan, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, host Jimmy Fallon said he found the character "frightening" after the first episode.

Bana joked, "I've been getting a lot of feedback that I'm really, really, really, really, really, really creepy on the show and I gotta tell ya, I wasn't going for creepy, so it's a little disconcerting." He added, "The rest of it's deliberate, but thank you; it's an amazing character... People can manipulate and do that kind of mental abuse, [and be] very, very adept at that, and that's part of their arsenal."

Fallon then amended his critique: "What I was saying was that you're charming... and that's what creeps me out. 'Cause something's gonna happen; something's off."

"Something" definitely does happen, and Bana summarizes John's role in the show perfectly: "I play John, who seems to be a pretty normal guy, and he meets Debra [Newell, played by Connie Britton] online and they begin a relationship and things start to emerge, cracks start to appear. Her daughters are the first ones [to suspect there was something wrong with him]."

However, there is one part of Debra's daughters' critique of him that Bana does not agree with: "Would you be suspicious of a man in cargo shorts or do you rock them in summer?" Bana asked Fallon.

You can be the judge of the first impression John makes on the family by watching the first episode here. And make sure to tune in when Dirty John officially premieres on November 25 at 10/9c.
